What Homeowners Need to Know This Season:
As the warmer months arrive, so do unwanted guests- Carpenter Ants. While many homeowners are familiar with the occasional ant in the kitchen, spotting these larger ants inside or outside your home could indicate a much more serious problem.
What Are Carpenter Ants?
Carpenter Ants are on of the largest ant species in the U.S, typically ranging from 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch long. Unlike your average ant, Carpenter Ants are more often black but can also be red or a combination of both. Their large size and powerful mandibles make them easy to identify once you know what to look for.
Why Are They a Concern?
Carpenter Ants are classified as a Wood Destroying Organism- and for a good reason. These ants don’t eat wood like Termites do, but they do excavate galleries inside wood to create nests. Over time, this behavior can lead to serious structural damage in homes, particularly in damp or decaying wood found in crawl spaces, basements, window frames and attics.
If you’re seeing them in inside your home, especially during spring and summer months, it could mean a nest is already present within your walls or wooden structures.
Signs of Carpenter Ant Activity
- Large black ants roaming indoors, day or night
- Rustling noises coming from walls
- Piles of wood shavings or frass (sawdust like material)
- Winged ants emerging indoors (a sign of a mature colony)
Don’t Wait for Damage to Spread
Carpenter Ant damage often goes unnoticed until it becomes extensive- and expensive- to repair. That’s why early detecting and treatment are critical.
